They’re both produced on the Lima Ranch in Hopland, California. The Lima was once a 2,000-acre sheep ranch is and is one of the oldest homesteads in southern Mendocino County. The region offers a Mediterranean microclimate perfect for growing olive trees and the Lima Ranch has been growing their trees for 40 years. The Lima Ranch also have a small Jacob sheep breeding program, a breed that has a piebald fleece, meaning it is dark colored sheep with areas of white wool. The name comes from the biblical story of Jacob who took every speckled and spotted sheep from his father in law’s flock and bred them. This breed allows for several variations of yarn from one sheep and the Lima ranch offers the yarn from their flock in several colors. The yarn was milled near the ranch at the Mendocina Wool and Fiber, Inc – which made the whole process local to the area.
