In the late 1960s Wheelock family entered the knitting industry and combined Warren Wheelock’s grandfather’s name “Stanley” with the first syllables of the last names of two sales agents “BERglass” and “ROsenberg,” then added on the ending from “COmpany.” Another name change came in 1987 when the name “Stanley” was dropped. Even though Berroco was founded as a yarn company in 1968 there have been six generations of Wheelocks continuously involved in the American textile industry. They have gone from producing woolen cloth to one of the largest importers and wholesalers of handknitting yarns. The company’s fine yarn division, based in Rhode Island, partners with mills and yarn suppliers in Italy, Peru, and other countries and are known for their timeless yarns and size-inclusive knitting patterns.
