Rowan

Named for the shrub that grows in the Yorkshire area, Rowan was founded in 1978 by Stephen Sheard and Simon Cockin above a grocery store in a village near Huddersfield – a region that’s entwined with British textile heritage and tradition. You can still see the Rowan leaf on the yarn labels designs. The duo wanted to focus on natural fibers in a paintbox palette for hand knitters that’s still at the core of Rowan’s timeless design today. In 1982 Rowan worked with knitwear designer Kaffe Fassett, known for his color and pattern use, to produce an immensely popular mail order kit that led to the launch of their magazine. The company continues to combine their high-quality yarns with designer-led inspiration. Though the ownership and studio location has changed the company is still in Yorkshire and partners with the finest producers and ethical companies throughout the supply chain to distribute their yarns all over the world.
